Arctic Slope Native Association (ASNA), a non-profit tribal health care organization, manages the Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital (SSMH) in Utqiaġvik, Alaska. Staff from ASNA and SSMH are located at the new hospital. SSMH is a facility unlike most others; it is located in the northernmost city of the United States and serves a population that spans across a region larger than the state of Washington. Serving the North Slope, a region that is colored by the heritage of the Iñupiat people, ASNA/SSMH works to preserve the health of the region as well as the culture.
