ASNA Announces Scholarship Awardees

ASNA is pleased to announce Serena (Williams) Nesteby and Angelica Telfair have been selected to receive the 2017 Guy Okakok, Sr. Leadership Award.

Serena (Williams) Nesteby is the daughter of Kathy and the late Robert Malabed and granddaughter of the late Eugene and Beulah Williams of Utqiaġvik. She is currently attending Western New Mexico University and is pursuing a Master of Arts in Social Work. Serena earned an undergraduate degree in Social Work from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2012. She has consistently displayed compassion and dedication as a mentor to at-risk youth and as a volunteer for several social services and youth organizations. Serena’s plans upon graduation include policy and advocacy work and continuing to work with homeless-at-risk youth within the state of Alaska.

Angelica “Angel” Telfair is the daughter of Marie and Ernie Stackhouse of Utqiaġvik and Daniel Telfair. She is currently attending Eastern Washington University and is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work. Angel graduated from Barrow High School in May 2016. She has actively served in many roles advocating for ending domestic violence and abuse and encourages others to speak out. Upon graduation, Angel plans to return home to Utqiaġvik to pursue a career in social work.

Each recipient will receive up to $5,000 per academic year to be applied to tuition, room & board, and other fees. The Guy Okakok Sr. Scholarship was established in 2015 by the ASNA Board of Directors with the intent of increasing homegrown health care providers.
