ASNA Begins Management of Assisted Living Center

Arctic Slope Native Association (ASNA) is pleased to announce it has been granted licensure by the State of Alaska as of February 29, 2016 to manage the day-to-day operations of the Assisted Living Center in Barrow.

The facility was previously managed by HOPE Community Resources through a contractual agreement with the North Slope Borough and will remain at its existing facility. ASNA has renamed the facility, Aimaaġvik, which translates to “a place you call home” in the Iñupiaq language.

“As a tribal health care organization, we are excited and pleased to provide elder care services because it has been a longtime goal of the ASNA Board of Directors. Respect and care for our elders is central to our culture and ASNA is proud to be able to provide enhanced care at Aimaaġvik. We appreciate HOPE Community Resources for providing 11 years of elder care services within the Arctic Slope. Quyanaq,” ASNA President/CEO Marie Carroll said.

“We would like to thank HOPE Community Resources for providing Assisted Living services to the North Slope over the last several years. We are excited for this transition to tribal health which has been a longtime goal of the North Slope Borough. This transition will improve the continuity of services between SSMH and the Assisted Living facility” said Doreen Leavitt, Director of the North Slope Borough Department of Health and Social Services.

Aimaaġvik is a 12-bed facility with six-shared rooms. The facility offers 24-hour supportive care, assistance with daily living activities, and organized recreational, spiritual, and physical activities for its residents. In addition, residents will now have traditional foods (niqipiaq) incorporated into their meals.

Longtime ASNA employee Diane (Dee) Nosbich has been named director of Aimaaġvik. “I am looking forward to the transition and am excited about the enhancements we are planning, including traditional foods on the menu, a closer working relationship with providers, and more planned activities for our elders.”

Aimaaġvik is now accepting traditional food (niqipiaq) donations to serve to elders at the facility. For a complete list of acceptable foods and preparation requirements, please contact SSMH Dietary Manager Kris Elkins at (907) 378-4748.

About North Slope Borough

The North Slope Borough is a home rule municipal government that encompasses over 94,000 square miles on Alaska’s North Slope – an area larger than the state of Wyoming. The majority of the Borough’s 8,000 residents are Iñupiat Eskimos that live in eight villages accessible only by air. Nearly all of Alaska’s oil production takes place within the Borough and property taxes derived from oil and gas infrastructure fund local government functions. Barrow, Alaska is the Borough’s largest village and serves as the seat of government.
