Delivery of exceptional medical care is dependent on accurate and timely lab results. Lab Services at Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital provide lab results that are generated in-hospital without time lost sending specimens to far away medical centers.

Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital Laboratory is a full service laboratory open seven days a week that provides diagnostic and phlebotomy services to our hospital, North Slope Borough, Public Health, and other outlying facilities and villages.

The analytical work performed at Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital Laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), whom is known for their high standards of excellence for accreditation of hospital laboratories. By being accredited by CAP, we are able to standardize testing and focus on the continuity of quality patient care.

Laboratory testing is an essential part of making good health care decisions. Accurate, quick and precise lab results at Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital ensure that our patients receive the best care possible in times when it is needed most. Lab work is also an important part of preventative health care and monitoring.  It is estimated 60 to 70 percent of all decisions regarding a patient’s diagnosis, treatment, hospital admission, and discharge are based on the results of the tests the Laboratory performs.

In 2025, our Lab team completed over 50,000 tests and panels using state-of the-art equipment. With more new equipment and new tests coming, the Lab continues to bring healthcare closer to home.
