Travel Services
The purpose of the Travel Department is to provide efficient and excellent service to all that we serve.
Patient Care and Care Coordination is a high priority for Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital. Patient Care Coordination is a combination of staff and resources to provide the best care possible.
The resources available for patient travel include:
- Medicaid/Denali Kid Care
- ASNA Medical Travel and Funeral Assistance (MTFA) Program
- SSMH Urgent/Emergent Patient Travel
There are three types of patient travel:
- Emergent Travel
- Urgent Travel
- Scheduled Travel
EMERGENT TRAVEL: IMMINENT DANGER, LOSS OF LIFE OR LIMB
Here are the criteria for emergent travel:
- The escort is authorized by the medical provider or medivac flight crew
- If authorized escort is unable to go medivac, then SSMH authorizes commercial flight travel
- SSMH Travel will provide the authorized escort’s return ticket
- Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC) Quyana Travel prepares return flight for patient and escort on medevac
URGENT TRAVEL: NON EMERGENT, THOUGH CONDITION WITH POSSIBLE THREATS TO LIFE OR LIMB
If you travel through SSMH urgent travel, the provider authorizes commercial flight travel (Alaska Airlines or RavN Airlines) for medical reasons. For all SSMH authorized commercial flight travel, the patient must be an Indian Health Services beneficiary.
Here are the criteria for urgent travel:
- The escort is authorized by the medical provider
- Taxi vouchers are available from the airport to SSMH
- SSMH Travel will provide the authorized escort’s return ticket
Depending on the time for prior authorization, Medicaid/Denali Kid Care Travel may provide:
- Travel from the outlying villages to Utqiaġvik or Anchorage
- Travel from Utqiaġvik to Anchorage or back to village from Utqiaġvik
SCHEDULED TRAVEL: NO THREAT TO LIFE OR LIMB
SSMH Case Management will provide the appointment letter.
Depending on the time for prior authorization, Medicaid/Denali Kid Care Travel may provide:
- Travel from the outlying villages to Utqiaġvik or Anchorage
- Travel from Utqiaġvik to Anchorage or back to village from Utqiaġvik
ASNA Medical Travel and Funeral Assistance (MTFA) may provide assistance with air travel and medical housing.
Travelers must apply with MTFA for housing assistance. Medicaid housing, and taxi and food vouchers are not available in Utqiaġvik. For more information on MTFA, click here.
