Medical Imaging Services
We make visible what was invisible; bring vision to what can’t be seen with the eye. We are dedicated to transforming patient experiences through state-of-the-art technology and techniques.
The Medical Imaging Department is a fully-digital, integral part of Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital that performs routine Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI), X-Ray and CT examinations, mammograms, ultrasounds, and bone density tests for a wide range of patients. It is with our knowledge and experience that we are able to detect and ultimately diagnose and treat a wide range of injuries and illnesses.
X-RAY
An X-ray is conducted to produce an image of tissues and structures inside the body, such as bones or teeth. SSMH provides:
• Digital X-rays
• Digital portable X-rays (done at bed-side)
• Digital portable X-rays in villages (Atqasuk, Kaktovik, Nuiqsut, Point Lay, Wainwright)
MAMMOGRAPHY
SSMH provides breast cancer screening and diagnostic imaging through three-dimensional mammography (tomosynthesis).
COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY(CT) SCAN
Computed tomography (CT) utilizes a rotating X-ray tube and a computer to produce cross-sectional images, also known as “slices”. These slices put together can create a three-dimensional image of the body. SSMH utilizes CT scans for:
• Trauma scanning
• Rapid AI—Instant results for strokes
• Brain perfusion—Instant results indicating need for an emergency thrombectomy
• Cardiac imaging
DUAL ENERGY X-RAY ABSORPTIOMETRY(DEXA) SCAN
DEXA scans can be used to diagnose osteoporosis or osteopenia, and assess fracture risk. SSMH offers hip and spine imaging, or whole body imaging.
MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING(MRI)
An MRI creates images of soft tissues, such as organs, muscles, and ligaments utilizing a powerful magnetic field and radio waves. An MRI provides an enhanced neurology imaging (brain and spine abnormalities), and an enhanced musculoskeletal imaging (blood vessels, bones, ligaments, muscles, and tendons). SSMH utilizes MRI scans to detect:
• Brain tumors
• Traumatic brain injury
• Seizures
• Strokes
• Dementia
ULTRASOUND
SSMH provides three-dimensional and four-dimensional ultrasounds. Obstetric ultrasounds are used to monitor fetal growth and development, check anatomical scan of fetus—including gender, and check position of fetus before childbirth. Ultrasounds also produce images of the abdominal organs.
Ultrasound services are extended to North Slope Borough village clinics served by SSMH (Atqasuk, Kaktovik, Nuiqsut, Point Lay, and Wainwright).
